Last night there was a dark, cloudless sky enriched by a combination of planets and satellites to take one’s breath away (see explanation here).
It was a beautiful sight which from my non-vantage point (covered by trees!) I tried to capture as best I could. I didn’t want to post this picture, it’s not a particularly good one, but it has taken on a meaning for me that goes beyond the technical quality of the image itself.

Yesterday the sky looked richer but the world was in fact poorer, as one of the most brilliant and honest European intellectuals had left us on that day. Antonio Tabucchi, lecturer, writer, translator, journalist, great mind, was of Italian birth and blood, but his words and his craft extended to other countries that he loved and lived in, and to a broader, borderless nationality.
I won’t write more about him, so many have done so already. I can only share on this page the best words I’ve found on the web to remember and celebrate him properly. He was great and his words will live on. So the symbolism of this picture, not perfect, not stunning, yet real and taken on the first night the world went to sleep without you, Antonio.
I will go back to your books and articles and interviews and celebrate you like a beautiful dark and cloudless sky with a bright geometry of planets and satellites, which gathered to bid you farewell.
